Reading the sessions

  • Forex trades over the counter from Sunday 17:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time. There are no official session hours
  • Liquidity peaks in the London / NY overlap, 08:00–12:00 New York time for most of the year. Spreads on EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/CAD are usually tightest then
  • The Tokyo / London overlap lasts one hour, or two while the UK is on summer time
  • Liquidity is thinnest between the New York close and the Tokyo open. Spreads widen around the 17:00 New York rollover
  • Sydney's daylight saving runs opposite to the UK's and the US's, and Tokyo has none. Overlaps shift for a few weeks in March, April, October and November
  • From early November to mid-March, Sydney opens at 09:00 on Mondays, at the weekly open
  • Sessions follow exchange holidays (ASX, JPX, LSE, NYSE), which can differ from bank holidays. On Columbus Day and Veterans Day the NYSE trades but US banks close
  • A holiday in one centre thins liquidity in its currencies everywhere. Expect wider spreads and sharper moves
  • Prices can gap at the Sunday open, so positions held over the weekend carry gap risk

Frequently asked questions

What are forex market hours?

The forex market trades from Sunday 17:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time. Activity moves through four main sessions: Sydney and London from 08:00 to 17:00 local time, Tokyo from 09:00 to 18:00 and New York from 08:00 to 17:00. Session hours are approximate liquidity windows, as forex has no central exchange.

What time does the forex market open on Sunday?

At 17:00 New York time. That is 22:00 GMT while New York is on standard time and 21:00 GMT while it is on summer time.

When is the best time to trade forex?

Most volume and the tightest spreads come in the London / NY overlap: 08:00 to 12:00 New York time for most of the year, which is 13:00 to 17:00 GMT in the northern winter and 12:00 to 16:00 GMT in the northern summer. The timeline shades it and leaves it out on days when either exchange is closed.

Does daylight saving change forex hours?

Yes. Sessions follow local time, so each one moves an hour against GMT when its clocks change. The UK, the US and Australia change on different dates and Japan does not change, so overlaps shift for a few weeks each spring and autumn.

Is the forex market open on holidays?

Yes, but a holiday in a major centre thins liquidity in its currencies. We mark a session as closed when its exchange (ASX, JPX, LSE or NYSE) is closed, and shorten it on an early close. Exchange holidays can differ from bank holidays: the NYSE trades on Columbus Day and Veterans Day while US banks are closed.

Why does the Sydney session start at 09:00 on some Mondays?

From early November to mid-March, 08:00 in Sydney falls before the weekly open at 17:00 New York time. The Monday session starts at the weekly open, 09:00 Sydney time.
